woman: a masterpiece

woman: a masterpiece

Friend. Sweet friend.

I don’t know if you read an article circulating around Facebook about women lately, but it was infuriating. It stated that men only want to date and eventually marry debt free, virginal women with no tattoos.

Infuriating didn’t actually really cut it for me. I actually called my mom because I was so mad. I just didn’t even know where to start, so calling my mom seemed like the best idea. I formulated my response in my head and was planning an epic “slap-back”… this is what I came up with instead.

You see, it’s not that I don’t agree with her, don’t get me wrong; what this woman wrote was wrongly researched, extremely biased, not factually based, and contextually wrong, but I do agree with two out of her three points. BUT VERY DIFFERENTLY.

Debt-Free: Well, yes, but I think this is just human nature. WE ALL WANT TO BE DEBT FREE. That is just plain common sense, and I think regardless of being Man or Woman, we would all just prefer that about ourselves, let alone our mates.

And virginal. This may be the thing you don’t agree with me on, and sweet friend, that is ok. I do think the marriage bed should be sacred, but it’s because I believe God made sex special and I only wanted to share it with my mate. Regardless of your choices and what you believe is right, you are not labeled un-marriagable because of this. After all, Joseph married a woman who wasn’t carrying his child, am I right?

But moving on. The biggest problem I had with this article was the fact that this woman was placing constrictions on the female gender and defining a woman’s place in regards to her purpose here on earth. That is what in infuriated me, because this woman is spreading the doctrine that oppresses women in the sphere of Christianity. Women were not created to live under man’s thumb. End of argument.

I have always felt this way. Even as a married woman who believes without a doubt in Jesus, the Bible, and the whole magilla. I know for a fact God did not create women to just be the arm candy on her good Christian Husband’s arm, while being barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.

And for you sweet sister reading this, here is why I know this to be true. The following few paragraphs below are from the devotional I am writing called The Well. It was during my actual Biblical research that I discovered these facts. And this below is what I will teach my daughter if I am ever blessed to have one and I will teach my son. That his mate, no matter her situation, non-virginal, tattooed and comes with a mile long credit card statement… she is a masterpiece.

It never ceases to amaze me how incredible poignant Jesus is/was. Because we live in the world we do now, we lose certain meaning to the contextual aspects to our familiar Biblical stories. And I’m talking BIG CONTEXT. Context that we, as women, don’t just need to be aware of, but we need to KNOW. Because the minute I began to see just who Jesus was to women, it changed my view of of him from being the Savior of Mankind, to him being the champion redeemer and lifter of women!

This is huge sister! Fellow woman. You sitting reading this as a female. You who bare pain probably because of the way you have been treated as a woman. Whether it was by your family, past boyfriends, husbands, friends, bosses, society, THE CHURCH… even other women.

You have been made to feel weak, less than, not good enough, shunned, helpless and hopeless, used and let go. Am I missing anything? I hope not!

But let me make one thing very clear; even if you only get one thing out of this study. Jesus has never, and will never view women as any of these things. Jesus has been, from the day woman was created, the number one champion of women kind, and I have to tell you, as a strong independent female, this is more empowering to me than any other accolade on this earth!

Jesus loves women. He LOVES women. Yes, he loves all his creatures, but I believe that women hold a special place in his heart. In case you aren’t familiar with the creation story found in Genesis Chapter 1-2, please read that now. Don’t worry, we will be here when you get back.

Ok, now that you are familiar with God’s 7 Day masterpiece of perfection, let’s talk about his crowning glory. Woman. That’s right sister. The very last thing God made in this entire universe was woman. Because he looked around and realized that yes, everything he made was good, but in it’s entirety, it wasn’t good. It wasn’t complete. The world needed women. Us. And not just as a “helper” for man; not someone to sit meekly, bear children, and cook dinner. No, he created woman to be THE counterpart for man. And sweet sister, this is where it get’s really good. This is not just opinion or my own interpretation. This is Hebrew translation to English. Black and white definition and where we as a society have missed context in regards to the English language.

Oh how I wish in 7th grade Bible class we were taught what I am about to lay down in front of you instead of how to make a coffee cake in the microwave. Yes, that is what I remember learning in regards to being a Proverbs 31 woman. What would our lives looks like if we as women were treated the way our Heavenly Father intended.

In the creation story, Genesis 2:18-25, God has looked around at all he has made. Light, dark, trees, water, animals, and finally man. He sees it and see says,”It is NOT GOOD for man to be alone, I will make him a helper fit for him.”

This is where we get it so wrong sisters. We have been told helper means, subordinate. The administrator, the person who gets coffee, takes notes, keeps the house, and on and on it goes. But God’s intentions of making Eve was to not wait on Adam hand and foot. She was not going to be waiting with a martini in her hand after Adam was done naming all the animals.

In the original Hebrew language, the word helper is Ezer. Ezer means, get ready for this, protect or to aid. It even has meanings of to surround and succour.

Did you catch that?

When God formed Even from Adam’s rib, it wasn’t to make a helpless, fragile creature. But a fierce warrior who would PROTECT, AID, AND SURROUND. We were made to compliment man, not to fall beneath them. No matter what our past looks like and the mistakes we have made. In no God created world were we EVER supposed to be less-than and worthless.

So wounded sister, take heart in this. I have tears in my own eyes as I write this because how I wished I had learned sooner that the God of the universe created me to be the Masterpiece of all Creation. One of the most important books as I read as an adult women was John and Stasi Eldredge’s book, Captivating. They write, “Woman is the crown of creation- the most intricate, dazzling creature on earth. She has a crucial role to play, a destiny of her own.”

Friend. Sister. You were made in God’s image. You were not a mistake, and you, yes, you are a masterpiece. Own it.

So lady who believes that women’s only goal is to get married, and to actually do that, you need to be debt-free, virginal, non-tattooed, doe-eyed, weak, subordinate, submissive, etc… actually crack open your Bible and read. Really read. Maybe start with Rahab. After all, she’s just a prostitute who later married a man and who’s lineage lead to Jesus.

Love you all, Em
