how to get a stellar swing set
When we had our baby boy, Andy couldn’t wait to put up a swing set. We both had swing sets growing up and our childhoods where shaped by our time spent outside on our “castles”, “time machines”, “mansions”. It was so important to give out little one the same imagination station!
BUT… have you checked out the prices of a swing set? Oh mercy! A brand new swing set can be over $1,000 and that’s not including all the cool add ons, and a custom one is even more expensive. We weren’t about to shell out the big bucks for one so we did something else… and we got one that’s infinitely cooler.
Welcome to the “Pirate Ship”!
Andy’s parents wanted to gift us a swing set but again, didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on it, so my mother in law took a wild chance to looked on Craig’s List for a swing set in good condition and BINGO.
She was able to find one for about $250-300. We just needed to pick it up. It was in such great condition and was exactly one of the models we were looking at but for about 5 times less! So winning! But in order to make it “ours”, we decided it would be amazing to paint it to look like our house. We took paint swatches from our house and had Home Depot match them. It turned out amazing.
Andy also wanted to include a sandbox, rubberized mulch under the picnic table (see below), and we added a pirate flag. The new total of our old “new” swing set was about it $500 total. If we had bought it all new, we would have spent about $2,000. Now we have a semi-custom swing set that our little pirate loves and it allowed us to save some money for some other fun projects! When we have people over, they either ask us who built our swing set, or where we bought it… we are amazed at how it turned out but it was so easy to do. So the next time you’re looking for a swing set, save your self the money and buy a used one and give it the face lift you want!
Love you all, Em
