Books for the Girl Who Loves to Read

Books are so important to me. If there is one thing I hope my children get from me, I hope it is the love of books. Lately, I have had books on the brain. I have just started a book club with some dear friends of mine and a couple nights ago, after we met, I let them raid my “library” (my cabinet) for books that they had been wanting to read. I think books are meant to be read, spines should be broken and words should be absorbed.

I am guilty for sometimes placing books on a higher priority than they should be. When we go on vacation, I want to read by the pool, Andy wants to play in the pool. I always carry a book with me (especially now that you can have them electronically) and am always looking for the next good book to read.

After our meeting the other night, I figured I should share some of my very favorite books. Some are old, some are new, some you have probably heard of, but considered this a take a penny leave a penny post. You have to leave me a good suggestion for a book. Let’s pass our love a reading a long!

Untitled Untitled Untitled 21. Captivating – EVERY woman needs to read this. Enough said. / 2. Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen knows women inside and out. / 3. Blue Like Jazz – For the intelligent girl who is looking for something deeper. / 4. Jane Eyre – We all wish we were an orphaned nanny at one point or another.

 5. The Book Thief – Bring kleenex, but hurry, read it before the movie comes out! / 6. The Alchemist – For the philosopher in all of us. / 7. Rules of Civility – Jazz, Parties, Friendship and the Big Apple / 8. The Help – For the strong protagonist in us all. / 9. Dawn – Strong, Sad, and Wonderful. / 10. The Thirteenth Tale – Haunting and beautiful, not every story is happily ever after.

 11. Speak – When to speak and when to not. / 12. The Furious Longing of God – If you ever need to know how loved you are, read this! / 13. Nickel and Dimed – For the social conscience girl who wants to make a change. / 14. The Scarlet Letter – For the girl who is stronger than her bullies. / 15. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan- Friendship can stand through anything.

16. Women’s Letters – From the Revolutionary War to present, love, friendship and more all in letters. / 17. The Shadow of the Wind – All about books, love and mystery! My FAV! / 18. If you liked THE HELP, THE YELLOW CROCUS and THE KITCHEN HOUSE should be at the top of your list. We have a lot of the same favorites. I loved THE THIRTEENTH TALE and have yet to find a similar book to that. Lisa See’s book are amazing as well. SHANGHAI GIRLS and DREAMS OF JOY are excellent.

Definitely read Wildwood Dancing. A genius and haunting combination of Twelve Dancing Princesses and the Princess and the Frog. For the princess in all of us.
